Sunrise over Bergsbotn

Bergbotn from a viewpoint in the mountains with the first sun rays hitting the mountains

It isn’t often that I publish a whole series of photos of the same view captured from the same point, but this morning offered such a variety of light that I decided to show how the scenery changed during a period of less than an hour. Bergsbotn is a beautiful bay on the northwestern side of the island of Senja. We are looking west as the sun is rising behind us (from east northeast). The image above shows the morning sun lighting up the mountain tops (north of Skaland) in the background.

But the most spectacular light was actually before the sun had risen. The full moon was still up highlighting the opening of the bay to the west (see the image below). And 15 minutes later the sky turned pink and purple and violet as moon light mixed with the rising sun – still below the horizon but lighting up the landscape.

Half an hour before sunrise the full moon marked the entrance to the bay
15 minutes later the sky turned purple, pink and blue, all reflected by the calm sea
And another 10 minutes later the moon was about to dip behind the clouds and the sun was knocking on the door

And 10 minutes after the image above I captured the image at the top of my post. The two images below were 4 and 8 minutes after the top image. The sun rose fast and soon the whole bay was bathed in sunlight and the reds and pinks faded away to be replaced by the warm sun. It was time to pack away cameras and tripod and for Jennifer and I to get a breakfast back at our hotel. My hands were freezing, although Jennifer had put hand warmers in my gloves to beat the cold!
