Rising up from the plains we have been dirving on for hours was a massive sandstone plateau: Isalo. Not dissimilar, but of course much smaller than the Colorado Plateau in the USA, it offered steep rock walls, deep river gorges, desert sandstone interspersed with lush vegetation in the valleys and eye candy for photographers and walkers alike.
Tore and I spent a few days here and today I post a few photos of the wider landscape. The following post will cover the more intimate details of the landscape and finally I have a few sunrise and sunset photos.
As sandstone is soft you can find several towering pieces of rock that look like sculpted by weather and winds. The most famous is La Reine de l’Isalo, the Queen of Isalo, which also can be found on every 1,000 Ariary bank note. I found a note and photographed it (see below).
Tore and I stayed at a wonderful hotel in Isalo – the first time we had aircon in our bedrooms. Arriving, we enjoyed a drink on the veranda with the dramatic landscape beside us.
