A Sea of Fog

St Thomas Church surrounded by fog in the valleys before the sun ha hit the church

The church of St Thomas is located outside Skofja Loka not far from the capital (nothing is that far away in this geographically small country. It is a Gothic church dating from around 1500. It is surrounded by lovely hills and mountains. We went there an early morning for photography. The. Church is only the background as it is more than a mile away.

On this special day all the valleys were filled with clouds/fog/mist and only the hilltops and the church could be seen. The mountains and the church floated in a sea of clouds that moved slowly, sometimes expanding and covering most of the mountains and hills including the church in a mist, sometimes opening up and exposing some houses or hills. The sun was covered in the clouds part of the time and then the sun rays broke through and exposed some dramatic elements of nature or of the church itself.

The church is hardly visible in the layers of fog
The sun has risen enough to light up the church and surrounding houses on the hill
Later in the morning more details are visible and the vision of the hills and mountains as islands in a sea of cloud or fog become pronounced
As the morning advanced the colours became more pronounced

Turning the camera the other way and looking away from the sun, the colours became more pronounced, but the feeling of islands in a sea of fog was still there.

Looking northwest from our hilltop position with the church of St Valentina visible on the hill
Even later in the morning the mist remained in the deep valleys
