Covered Bridges

Albany Covered Bridge over Swift River along the Kancamagus Highway, New Hampshire

The covered bridges are as typical for New England as the white churches and red barns that I have shown before. This is the Albany Bridge across the Swift River running along the White Mountains in New Hampshire. The second image is the same bridge captured a little bit further down and from the other river bank. The roof over the bridges is there to protect the bridge from all the snow that falls in winter. But why so many New England bridges have them but none in Switzerland or Austria, I don’t know. Maybe the snowfall is more accentuated in New England?

To photograph an image like the one above where both the leaves near the camera and the bridge and trees in the background are sharp I took a series of images at different focal distance and then merged them in Photoshop. The Photoshop program then can automatically select what image is sharpest for each little part of the total picture and merge them all together. Without this technology, you would struggle to get everything sharp.

The following photo is of the Northfield Falls Covered Bridge in North Vermont near sunset. The last sun rays were still lighting up the bridge, but a few minutes later it was all in shadow.

After this photo I have two different bridges from Jackson in New Hampshire. The first one is called the Honeymoon Covered Bridge. This “honeymoon” or “kissing bridge” received its nickname from the tradition of lovers kissing under it for good luck. Jackson’s endearing symbol for over a century, the Paddleford truss bridge was constructed about 1876 by Charles Broughton and his son Frank. Unfortunately Jennifer was taking another walk, while I took the photo, so I didn’t receive any kiss!

And finally two images of Flume Covered Bridge over Pemigewasset River at Flume Gorge, New Hampshire. I will soon post more images from Flume Gorge.

  1. A very interesting set, Jan-Eric!

It makes perfect sense to cover the bridges so that the snow doesn’t settle and overload them, but this is something that I’d never considered! Every day is a school-day!
