Farm buildings in North Finland

Farm houses from the outdoor history museum in Kuusamo

Our visit to Finland was mainly to experience nature and wildlife, but through our photographer/guide Paavo’s knowledge about the area, we also got an opportunity to see some of the villages and farmhouses in this area. My photos are from two lived in villages (although not all the houses were inhabited, when I photographed them in February) north of Kuusamo, and I also have some images from the local history museum in Kuusamo.

The buildings represent both farm houses for the people and storage areas and barns. The outbuildings and barns are normally not painted, whereas the houses for people were often painted red or yellow. I loved the contrast between the black and white landscape and the buildings in red, yellow, grey and brown. It creates a very minimalist landscape, and I let the images speak for themselves.

Virkkula Village

I don’t think anyone lived here during winter time

This barn built of logs with a “drive through” area had a great location at the lakeside
