Linhares

The castle at Linhares

Castelo de Linhares da Beira was erected between the later part of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th century (Sic!). It is at an altitude of more than 800 metres on the western slopes of the mountains of Estrela. The castle seems to grow organically out from the granite base it sits upon. We arrived to Linhares with a cold wind blowing across the Serra da Estrela and Jennifer and the children stayed in the hotel, while I ventured out with the camera. However, we all met up later for a dinner at Cova da Loba situated between the church and the castle.

At the upper part of the village, near the castle, you will find the parish church.
