Slovenian Highlands

Looking southeast towards the mountain range at Triglavski National Park

The Julian Alps shoot out to the east of what we normally associate as the Alps and cover a little area in northeast Italy and Slovenia. After we had visited Lake Jasna we drove south up into the Julian Alps. They are not rising as high as the central Alps. Mount Trigrav in Slovenia is 2,864 m high (the highest peak in Slovenia), whereas Mont Blanc, the tallest mountain peak in the Alps rises 4,809 m above sea level. Mont Blanc is a lot further to the west, on the border between France, Italy and Switzerland (but with the highest peak in France).

We drove south up into the Julian Alps but the road was blocked further south by snow and we stopped at a lovely viewpoint warmed by the sunshine and took a walk. The images are captured at an altitude of around 1,700 m.

My last image is from another part of Slovenia. We are halfway between Bled and Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia driving up a steep incline to a church I will show in the next post. The altitude here is around 700 m and the image is captured just south of the village of Kropa.
